synopsis:

‘IK KURI IK SUPNA’ is the story of a girl named Lalli and her dream. Lalli dreams of a beautiful world with lakes, trees, and blue skies; where she can be as free as a bird. When Lalli finally confides in her best friend MINDI, her dearest friend convinces her that this dream world exists in Canada..

LALLI reluctantly travels to a new country at the advice of her Mother and best friend, but when she arrives in the land of her dreams she faces many hardships and torture at the hands of her violent spouse. LALLI struggles to hold onto her identity and self-respect while living through this horrible nightmare.

‘IK KURI IK SUPNA’ is the untold story of so many immigrant wives that travel abroad with a beautiful dream of new beginnings but are confronted with a harsh reality.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

For many years the issue of domestic violence has been ignored by the Indian community. You can almost say it has become a part of life; everyone knows about it, but no one is talking about it.

In this film we have tried to present the reality of domestic violence, without bias or opinion. It may be a difficult film for some to watch because it relates to their own personal story, but we truly believe that it will inspire change. It is our vision that at least one life will be touched, changed, or saved by this film.

Some of the underlying themes in the film include; the issue of gender inequality, the treatment of immigrant wives, and the overall importance of a women’s right to choose her own life path and partner.

We hope that this film is able to engage the audience and start a conversation on the important issues presented within it. This in turn will make the film a platform to provoke though and discussion around these issues and struggles.
